Who was Linda Kolkena? Linda Broderick grew up in a strict and religious home before shifting to San Diego and meeting Dan Broderick. She was 21 when she met Dan, but the couple’s marriage was cut short in a flurry of bullets.
A Strict Upbringing
As per Stumbo’s book, Linda was the youngest among four children and grew up in Salt Lake City after her Dutch parents shifted to the United States in the 1950s. Her father, Arnoldus Johanes, worked as a freight handler for a trucking company for about 30 years before his lung failed, and he was formidable to leave the job.
As Roman Catholics, her parents worked hard to send their children to private schools until the family could not afford the additional cost, so the children were transferred to public schools. But even after that, religion remained an integral part of the family. According to the book, Linda’s older sister, Maggie Seats, said the family recited prayer at every meal and strictly observed holidays.
Linda’s Mother, Everdina Bernadetta Lolkena, died when Linda was 11 years old after battling breast cancer. Later Johanes remarried a fellow widow he met in their Dutch community.

The Truth about Linda Kolkena & Dan Broderick
The marriage of Linda Kolkena and Dan Broderick remained less than a year before their demise. The couple were shot dead by Dan’s ex-wife, Betty Broderick. Their story has been the subject of every show, including the second season of ” Dirty John”, a Netflix true crime feature which illustrates the incidents that led to Kolkena and Broderick’s murder.
Dan and Betty were married in their early 20s and had four children together. Their relationship went through the years, and Dan admitted to having an affair with Linda Kolkena, as reported by Newsweek. Soon divorce took place, and the custody of their four children was given to Dan, which destroyed Betty. In 1989, their former wife of Dan went into the home of her former husband and his new wife and shot them in their sleep.
Betty and Dan’s relationship was already not stable when Dan met Linda in 1983. Linda was 21 then and worked as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines before she got a job as a receptionist in the building where Dan Brodrick’s law firm was situated. Their relationship blossomed from there.

Linda and Dan’s Relationship
Friends described Linda as a natural comedian who made people laugh by reciting the airline instructions she had memorized. Other friends say the couple breathed new life into one another.
The couple told friends they wanted to have children and planned to start a large family independently.
Dan proposed to Linda in 1988 after dropping on one knee in front of attorneys, paralegals and legal secretaries at the famous Dobson’s Bar.
Dan hired Linda in his firm as a paralegal.
According to Oprah Daily, Linda had no experience in law and didn’t even know how to type. Eventually, Dan had no problem hiring a young girl and giving her a salary of $3,00,000 per year. Dan and Betty’s marriage was not going well then, and Betty was suspected of an affair. In the book ” Hell Hath no Fury”, Betty gives a statement in the court about Linda, which read, ” She wasn’t a lawyer. She wasn’t even a secretary, she couldn’t type. He needed a lot of help, and I couldn’t see that she was the person to help him “, after that Betty gave an ultimatum to Dan, to fire Linda or leave home.
Revenge
Betty could not take the news of her breaking marriage well and repeatedly disabled the home she had once shared with her husband.
Early morning Ambush
Six months after their wedding and lavish honeymoon in the Caribbean, Linda and Dan was shot dead.
In the early morning, Betty drove to the couple’s home and went upstairs to their bedroom with her .38-caliber revolver. Striking Linda once in the chest and once in the back of the head, she killed Linda instantly.
Another bullet tore through Dan’s lungs.
Linda and Dab were laid to rest in the two matching wooden coffins. Linda’s coffin was topped with white roses, while covered Dan’s was with red roses.
Linda’s tombstone borrows a line from William Blake’s poem, “She who kisses the Joy as it flies, Lives in eternity’s sunrise.”
